Strengthening Stormwater Infrastructure

Overflowing creeks, blown-out backflow valves, overwhelmed combined sewers: we found a lot of vulnerabilities on Canada Day. Climate change is real, it’s here, and the concept of a 1-100 storm isn’t enough to meet the moment when we have 3 storms in 4 years that leave residents traumatized and their homes vulnerable.

Stormwater management is a critical issue for any neighbourhood, and it’s been neglected in many parts of College Ward.

Solutions

  • The City, the Rideau Valley Conservation Authority, and the NCC must coordinate for better maintenance of our area creeks and improve management of their flow during heavy rain events
  • Older neighbourhoods must get answers for damage done to their homes during the Canada Day flooding, and recommendations must be specific and actionable
  • Ditch maintenance and rehabilitation in City View, Crestview and Bells Corners, among others, must be prioitized and accelerated
  • Better education and expanded funding for City programs like the Residential Plumbing Program and Sloped Driveway protections
  • Provincial and federal funding for flood mitigation and climate change resilience for College Ward
